The Millstone Family Restaurant is a full service family style restaurant where our entire menu is served all day long. We are open seven days a week. We pride ourselves on fast, friendly service. We appreciate and are proud to serve our local guests and are happy to meet those traveling through our town as well.
The Millstone Family Restaurant is locally owned and operated. The Milbank location is the original location opening in 1978. The name Millstone actually comes from an Old English flour mill that is across the street from our restaurant. At this particular flour mill, a stone driven by a large wind mill was used to grind the wheat into flour, hence the name Millstone. This mill has recently been restored to its original functioning state.
Brothers David and Jimmy Forrette grew up in Sisseton, South Dakota where they both worked in the restaurant business as young boys. David graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management. Jimmy has worked for Pepsi in Ortonville, Minnesota for 26 years. The Forrette brothers along with their wives formed the 4-et Incorporated in February of 2000. (4-et is a basic representation on how to pronounce their last name.) On February 15th, 2000 they bought the Millstone Family Restaurant in Milbank, South Dakota.
David and his wife Sheri along with their three children, Brittney, Ashley, and Ben, relocated from Brookings in the spring of 2000 after purchasing the business. David is the General Manager of the Millstone overseeing the day-to-day operations.
Jimmy and his wife Lisa have made Milbank their home for over 20 years with their three children, Eric, Jessica, and Laney. Lisa has been a long time employee of the restaurant and now as an owner, you will see her greeting and serving our guests daily.
In 2007, Assistant General Manager Geoff Benson became a partner in the business. David and Geoff met in Brookings. Geoff has made Milbank his home since 2003. You will see Geoff often at our catering events.
In 2013, Assistant General Manager Matt Allen became a partner in the business. Matt is from Milbank, and he has worked at the Millstone since high school. He is the man behind the scenes who helps with the daily operations.
The Millstone expanded into the catering business in 2003 which included a complete remodel of our kitchen and adding an area to prepare catered meals. We have since prepared and served meals for many local events including weddings, reunions, graduations, grand openings, birthdays, and athletic and scholarship banquets. We also cater to local businesses on a weekly basis. It is not uncommon to find David and Sheri, Jimmy and Lisa, their children, Geoff, and Matt all working at the restaurant on Sunday morning or catering a function together. It is truly a "family" business.
